Colorado Romance Writers Blog Hop
WELCOME JESSICA ASPEN!

Thanks for having me as your guest today, Helen. I enjoyed writing about my inspiration for Little Red Riding Wolf and I’ll be looking forward to responding to comments. Leave a comment today on Helen’s Haven to enter to win prizes including an e-copy of Little Red Riding Wolf.

Twisted Fairy Tales have hit the spotlight with shows like Grimm and Once Upon a Time, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for me. I love twisted fairy tales, but these aren’t your child’s fairy tales. I twist them for adults. I didn’t start writing them in response to the new wave of movies and TV shows. I started because I’ve always loved fairy tales. Where else can you find shape-changing princes or evil witches or tales with happy-ever-afters? Why, paranormal romance!

Paranormal romance for adults, that is. While I love children’s tales, my twists are full of adult entertainment mixed with a dose of the paranormal and laced with just a hint of a traditional tale. How do I make it work? Move the traditional tale out of the past and into a modern Colorado Rocky Mountain setting. Change the little girl into a full grown woman who is also the wolf. And add in a hunky forest ranger for her to devour instead of the woodsman.

Keep some of the traditional elements and spice them up. Red’s cape becomes a hoodie and Red’s fear changes into an exciting adventure where she calls the shots by deciding that a one-night stand might just be what a good girl needs. But what happens when her lover discovers he’s falling in love with a werewolf, and that the real big bad wolf is her brother?

That’s how I twist a child’s tale into an adult adventure that will have you looking forward to the second book, nearly ready and waiting in the wings. If you thought Red was an adventure, look out for what Snow White’s foray into the world of the adult. Evil stepmothers watch out!

You can discover Little Red Riding Wolf at Passion In Print Press HERE, or Amazon HERE or Barnes and Noble HERE.

Fraternizing with humans is taboo, but when feisty werewolf Red runs into hunky new forest ranger Evan Brewster, she jumps on the opportunity to let loose her desires. Evan is stoked when he meets the petite red haired hottie, and combined with his new discovery of wolves in Colorado, thinks his career and life are made. Then Red pushes him away, her hostile brother threatens his life, and things begin to spiral out of control. Caught between her sexy lover and her pack can Red trust Evan with her secrets, or must she sacrifice her human lover and her heart?

  2. There are werewolves in Colorado?

    O_O

  3. Absolutely! But they are incognito. That's why Red has a mission in Little Red Riding Wolf. Keeping werewolves a secret is of vital importance!

    1. Another twisted fan! One of the things that I love about the fairy tales is how many ways there are to change them up, and how you still keep the essence of the story. It's a great lesson in that there are no new stories, just new storytellers. Glad you dropped by. :)

  7. oh wow. that sounds awesome! i love a good fairytale, and when someone takes them and twists them into something new and different, i just get all excited. so thanks very much jessica.

i have to admit that i have on tape all of once upon a time episodes, but haven't watch a single one yet. i was kinda waiting to know if they were going to renew it or not. i got into unforgettable and was behind about 5 episodes but learned today it's not being renewed, nor is the finder. which sucks b/c i liked those two shows. lol. oh well.

    hope you have fantastic success.

    1. Sounds like my author friend Hillary Seidl, she is upset about Finder too. I didn't get started on that one. It's tough when they don't renew, I still miss the Dresden Files and there were so many books left to cover. Love that series! Thanks for the well wishes!

  13. I was blown away the first time I read the real fairy tales, not the sanitized versions by Little Golden Books and Disney. The originals were very scary stories with memorable consequences meant to keep people in line. They didn't have the sexiness of your stories, which I am really looking forward to reading, but they did have animals snacking on humans. lol

    1. The original Grimm fairy tales are very grim. I really should see if that's where the word derived from because it is so apropos. It is pretty shocking to read stories where people die from shoes and the happy every after always comes at a price. This series is a little lighter than that, hope you like it just as much!

  14. I just love those twisted fairy tales! They give you a sense of the familiar combined with a totally new flavor! Let's hope they give vampire stories a run for their money.

    1. That's the next trend Lori, Twisted Fairy tales are here! The question is will they remain mainstream longer than this year? I sure hope so as I am now heavily invested in Once Upon a Time. And that guy in Grimm is very cute!

  15. I day late to the party, Jessica. Mea culpas all over the dang place. Now, where is my sword? Oh, right. It's at the shop. It needed repairs b/c I've had to throw myself on it so many times over the last few months.

WONDERFUL post. No spoilers from me on LRRW. I can not wait until the next one hits the press.

  17. That cover is a little on the dark side, but my story is a little lighter than that. I wouldn't call it one of my darker stories, that's for sure. Even though it does have the werewolves. Thanks for dropping by Clare!

  18. Okay, I've read this novella and I love it! I agree the cover is scary but when you read the story, you're delighted and left wanting more. Can't wait to hear about Snow White!

  19. Thanks Elizabeth! I do write some dark horror, but it's mostly in my flash fiction. For some reason writing really short brings out my dark side. Little Red Riding Wolf is fun, and I'm determined to finish my Snow and the Seventh Wolf ASAP!
